Nanotechnology- Science Shaping our Future
- Nanotechnology has recently crossed into a $1billion dollar industry.
-The near future will likely be biomedical - medicines with "magnets" that would only attach to cancer cells etc.
- E-Ink on fabric is something already in development
- Synthetic silk= made through nano-fabrication. Kindles work by aligning everything(that is the energy consumption). Silk could be made in the same fashion. Learn the rules assemble the "legos" (particles) and create designer materials.
- Knee replacements are a great early example. Nanotech will boost replacement duration from 15years to 105 years.
-Currently it is on a very simple level for design but it will eventually dominate technology.
- High School Grads could be in the market for any position (marketing, business, etc.) just like biomedical industry. But, of course, scientists will drive the innovation. Physics and Material Science are the major focuses. Chemistry will have consistently lower impact over the next 5 decades so that could be given less emphasis.
- The future is in the point of change. Where individual ingrediants transition from 2 to 1. That magic reaction moment.
-carbon fiber usage to reduce weight while maintaining strength is another example. light cars= more efficient cars
-communication applications? Not that Dr. Yuval is aware of. The low hanging fruit are the material applications. Communications would require math to describe the systems. Superconductors however are definitely an application.
-designer diseases-> nanotechnology for terrorist applications? nano-technology filter
